Is The Sunscreen In Your Makeup Enough?

Is The Sunscreen In Your Makeup Enough?

It’s time to start thinking about sunscreen.  After this winter, who isn’t ready for some sunshine! But are you ready to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays?  The sunscreen in your make up is not enough.  There are a number of reasons that sunscreen in makeup isn’t the same as applying a good, sunscreen. The first is that it’s a secondary purpose of the product, what I mean is that the goal of the makeup is to be just that – makeup (foundation, powder, etc.) which is used to cover imperfections and uneven facial tone.

Even though some makeup has sunscreen ingredients, it doesn’t have the capabilities to protect against UVA and UVB rays.  It would take most people 7 layers of foundation and 14 layers of powder to get the SPF coverage stated on the makeup packaging.  And to keep that level of protection one would need to reapply several times a day.  Who would do that?  Sunscreen makeup simply isn’t doing enough to protect skin from aging.

Another thing to think about is that when you are applying sunscreen you also need to apply it to the neck, chest, ears, arms, and hands, as well as the face. We often forget that we need to be applying our sunscreen to all exposed body parts.  Who puts makeup on all of those body parts?

The most important step in your daily care regimen is a broad spectrum sunscreen.  Broad spectrum sunscreen products are the number one defense against ultra violet (UV) rays that we have to help protect the skin. We recommend that you purchase a good broad spectrum sunscreen and apply it every single day to all exposed areas even when it’s cloudy and gloomy outside.

How do I choose what sunscreen is best for me?

It is known that UV-induced free radical damage can occur when the UVA and UVB rays break down the active ingredients in sunscreens.  PCA Skin, which is our primary skin care line, has five unique formulations of sunscreens to fit any skin type or condition.  Each broad spectrum sunscreen also contains advanced antioxidants, silybin (which is derived from milk thistle) and caffeine to provide additional protection against UV-induced free radical damage

The Food and Drug Administration guidelines recommend using a teaspoon of a broad spectrum sunscreen to cover your face, chest and ears.  They also recommend reapplying every 2 hours.  The FDA also recommends that you use a broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF value of 15 or higher and limit the time you are in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.  Following these recommendations is also part of the key to great skin. Quite simply, one’s makeup just isn’t going to cut it as a sunscreen.  Contact one of our Estheticians today to schedule a skincare consultation to assure you are using the best products for your unique skin type and condition.
