Peptides…what are they and the benefits in skin care

With all of the anti-aging skincare products on the market, you may be wondering what are peptides all about!  Reading the lables on the packages is not so easy either and often includes many unpronounceable words.

WHAT ARE PEPTIDES

Peptides act as transmitters from the brain to the body, telling the muscles and nerves to perform specific functions.  Peptides are an important ingredient as they have been proven to stimulate the production and depostion of matrix components–primarily collagen–which is important in building facial volume and enhancing a youthful appearance.  Loss of facial volume (collagen and elastin) occurs as we age and the exposure to UV rays can accelerate the process.

Peptides are comprised of amino acids in a chain of 50 or less.  Longer chains of amino acids are called proteins.  Peptides play an important roll in replacing lost collagen.  Collagen is composed of long chains of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds.  As the collagen breaks down, the protein chains become smaller chains of peptides.  These resulting peptide chains send signals to the body to produce more collagen.

Peptides are small and can penetrate the skin’s protective barriers.  Applying good skin care products/serums with peptides tricks the skin into thinking that it has lost collagen recently and need to produce more.

IMPORTANT PEPTIDES FOR FACIAL VOLUME

There are multiple peptides available that will achieve different results when used topically.  Listed below are a few of the most critical to a regimen designed to build facial volume.

*  Matrixyl (Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38)  – evens out skin, relieves and smoothes wrinkles by stimulating the constituents of skin matrix and dermal-epidermal junction.

*  Matrixyl 3000 (Palmitoyl Oligopeptide and Palmitoyl Tetrapepetdie-7)  Helps repair damaged tissues, reduces inflammation, improve tissue elasticity, improves firmness and stimulates collagen production.

*  Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-8)  Minimizes existing lines and wrinkles and prevents new ones from forming….a peptide alternative to Botox.

*  Copper peptides heal wounds and stimulate hair follicles.  Copper peptides act as an antioxidant and help regenerate cells.

*  Neruopeptides dramatically improve the appearance of skin’s resilience, tone and texture, decrease appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  These are completely different from the common pentapeptides and more costly compared to simple peptides.

BOTTOM LINE

Our skin is the largest organ of the human body and it is very complex.  There is no single solution for all the signs of aging just as there isn’t one healthy food to eat or supplement to take.  There are highly effective  injectable fillers to replace lost volume in the skin such as Restalyn or Juvaderm.  However, topical products should be maintained.  Applied twice a day, peptides used in a cocktail of great ingredients, and a daily sun protection is the best thing you can do for the health and appearance of your skin.

Infuse Skin and Body has quality products containing peptides and other key ingredients, along with broad spectrum UV sun protectors.  Our estheticians will educate you on the products and treatments for your best anti-aging regimen.
